Home - Wind Energy
He global wind energy potential is about five times the current global electricity use. By the end of the year 1990, the World wide wind power installed capacity was 2000 MW only. The corresponding figure for March 2009 was 128,492 MW. That indicates an increase of nearly 64 times, just in a span of 19.25 years. Washington based World watch Institute calls wind power “World’s fastest growing energy source”. Not only the total installed capacity, the size of individual machine, (its capacity, rotor diameter, tower height etc) is also growing fast year after year due to the Technological Developments. Even then, as of now, wind power generation is only about 1 % of the Global Power consumption. So, there is a long way to go, still

Power Generation in India

Wind Power Generation has acquired much significance in recent years in India, as well. Among the Wind Power Generating Countries of the whole world, India stands fifth. By end March, 2009 the total installed capacity in India was 10,242 MW. This amounts to 22.03 % of wind potential of 46,485 MW available in India. It indicates the vast scope still available for future developments in the Wind Power Generation Field.

Wind Power Generation in TamilNadu

Among the various States of India, Tamilnadu stands first in harnessing wind power. As on 31 st. March , 2009 the total installed Capacity of wind turbine in Tamilnadu was 4271.39 MW. It works out to 41.95 % of the total installed Capacity of India. The high Wind potential of Tamilnadu could be attributed to the three passes (Aralvoimozhy, Shenkottai, Palakkad) existing in the Western Mountain Range. The wind speeds downstream of these passes are high and that is the reason for the thick population of Wind Turbines in the areas like Muppandal in Kanyakumari District, Kayathar in Thirunelveli District and Poolavadi & Kethanoor in Thiruppur District.
